An Unprecedented Suspension of Hunting 

The debate surrounding the hunting of the rock ptarmigan is taking on a new dimension in France. This iconic high-mountain bird, found mainly in the Alps and the Pyrenees between altitudes of 1,800 and 3,000 meters, is receiving growing attention due to an observed decline in certain populations. While adapted to extreme weather conditions, it is nonetheless particularly vulnerable to rapid transformations in its environment. For several years, scientists and wildlife managers have been warning about the combined effects of global warming, rising tourist numbers, and the fragmentation of the species' habitat. Against this backdrop, several nature protection associations have decided to take the debate into the legal arena.
