In 1856, in the Aosta Valley, King Victor Emmanuel II declared these mountains a royal hunting reserve and banned hunting there to save the ibex from extinction. Founded in 1922, it is Italy’s oldest park and boasts 59 glaciers. Gran Paradiso National Park is the perfect place to closely observe a wealth of wild animals native to mountain environments. Its 710 km² border the 529 km² of the Vanoise National Park.
